Megan Middleton Why do barriers exist? Unit 26 P3

P3- Explain barriers which may be experienced by individuals with additional needs.

Employment opportunities

There are a number I reasons why barriers may exist around employment, these may be;

 No access to the interview due to no ramp for wheelchairs.
 A lack of variety when it comes to applying. An example may be audio for anyone visually
impaired.
 Other employees may discriminate, causing the individual to be unable to work at the level
that they are qualified for.
 The employer may assume that the employee will always be ill due to their disability. They
may be limited when it comes to work, meaning they won’t be in employment for long.
 The employer may think that employing someone with a disability will be expensive due to
carrying out appropriate adjustments.
 The employee may have, limited skills when it comes to reading and writing.
 Little or no aids to communication may be available for the employee to communicate. This
can cause a communication barrier.
 The individual may have little or no confidence when applying for a job, this may be due to
past rejections when it comes to applying for a position.

Physical access

A barrier is something that prevents and individual from moving freely. These may be manmade or
natural and can affect people in different ways. They can affect individuals with additional needs in a
number of ways such as;

 A lack of disabled toilets restricting the individual from using the facilities.
 Unable to adjust equipment, this may be a mammography machine as a female may not be
able to stand due to a disability.
 Steps or curbs preventing them from entering a building.
 An alternative way to weigh an individual who is in a wheelchair as they will not be able to
stand.

Attitudinal

An attitudinal barrier is basic but impacts other barriers, an example of this may be when an
individual is ignorant to physical disabilities, this can cause an issue when it comes to entering a
building, this may lead to a lack of interaction between the individual and their daily life. Attitudinal
barriers may include;

 Discrimination, prejudice and stigma- this is due to people assuming that people with
disabilities as a misfortune or something that must be prevented. They are seen as not
normal and therefore do not fit into society.
 Stereotyping- this may be when others make assumptions when it comes to an individual
with a disability. This might include assuming that they will be unfit to work as they will be ill
on a regular basis due to their disability.

Our knowledge of disabilities is not up to date and constantly improving. An individual is only seem
as having a disability when society does not meet the individual’s needs. Support must be provided
so that the individual can lead an independent life.
