Democracy and Participation
Democracy
Demo – people
Cracy – rule

Democracy is:
- A system of government by the whole population of all the eligible members of a
state, typically through elected representatives.

We need democracy for legitimacy.
It is difficult to make sure everyone is represented because some people don’t have the
right to vote, and some people don’t like any party. Smaller parties tend to get less votes.

Legitimacy – people accepting and recognising that those in power have the right to govern
us.

A direct democracy is where all eligible people have a say in the decision-making process.
This can be when all citizens meet and make decisions via a vote. A referendum is another
form of direct democracy.

Benefits of direct democracy:
- Everyone has an equal say
- People cannot complain about the outcome
- Increases interest and engagement in politics

Direct Democracy in the UK: Referendums are the closest we have to direct democracy in
the UK.

In a representative democracy citizens elect representatives who make decision on their
behalf. In a liberal democracy, these representatives are elected by a large franchise (a large
number of people are eligible to vote) in regular elections.

Benefits of representative democracy:
- Representatives tend to be better informed and educated
- Less strain on the elective
- Element of accountability
- Takes less time from the electorate, they can further engage with it.

Disadvantages of representative democracy:
- Less people feel as if they have had a say
- Representatives could pursue own interests
- People might not trust in their representatives
- Voting system might allow extremist views
- People might feel unrepresented by the elected party
