NURS 248 Pediatric Nursing
NURS 248 Pediatric Nursing consists of a theory class and a clinical component. The course focuses on the role of the
professional nurse in supporting and promoting adaptive coping responses for pediatric clients and their families in a
variety of settings.
Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory is incorporated into course delivery to facilitate learning of theory and to encourage
critical thinking. Patricia Benner’s theory of novice to expert is incorporated into clinical experiences as students use
nursing theory to guide delivery of care in the pediatric clinical setting.
Prerequisites: NURS115 or NURS205, NURS243, and NURS118
Placement of Course: 3rd Semester of ADN Nursing Program
Course Credit: 3 credits
Time Allotment:
a) Didactic 2 hours/week for 16 weeks 2 credits
b) Clinical 7 hours/week for 14 weeks 1 credit

Course Objectives/Learning Outcomes Nurs. 248
Upon completion of the course, the students will be able to:
1. Distinguish physiological, psychological, social-cultural, and spiritual concepts needed to provide safe and
competent nursing care to pediatric patients and their significant others.
2. Analyze use of the nursing process using clinical reasoning to assist pediatric patients and their significant others
with adaptive behaviors to promote health, quality of life, and/or death with dignity.
3. Relate caring and culturally sensitive interactions with pediatric patients and their significant others to attain
optimal health, quality of life, and/or death with dignity.
4. Relate principles of verbal and written communication with other health care team members and with pediatric
patients and their significant others.
5. Analyze quality and safety competencies, standards of professional nursing practice, and nursing’s legal, ethical,
and regulatory framework while providing safe and competent holistic care to pediatric patients and their
significant others.
6. Relate teaching/learning principles to promote healthy behavior and optimal adaptation of pediatric patients
and their significant others.
7. Analyze collaboration with other health care team members and with community resources while managing the
care of pediatric patients and their significant others.

Evaluation Methods
1. Grading: Students must pass the course components of online/didactic and clinical to pass the course. If a
student fails clinical, he/she will also receive a failing didactic grade.
2. Mid-term Evaluation: Students are expected to monitor their own online/didactic and clinical course progress
and seek assistance in an appropriate and timely manner from the instructor(s) throughout the course. If the
student is failing the course at mid-term, a notice of unsatisfactory progress will be given and a learning contract
will be initiated.
3. Clinical Performance: Clinical is a pass or fail grade. To receive a passing (satisfactory) grade in clinical
performance, the student must satisfactorily meet all clinical learning outcomes and receive a passing grade on
all clinical assignments. If the student is not passing clinical at mid-term or at any time the instructor deems it
necessary, a student learning contract will be initiated. See Clinical Syllabus section.
4. Math dosage and calculation exam will be given during the first week of school during ACE session. You will
have 60 minutes to complete the 20-question exam. This test is not included in the overall test points for the
course. Students need to score 95% or better to pass the exam. A student not passing the first exam will receive
a learning contract and be referred for individual math remediation.
*Students are not permitted to pass medications in the clinical setting until they have passed the dosage
calculation exam. One retake is allowed. Please contact your lecture instructor to set up a day and time to
retake the exam. If not passed on the second attempt, the student will not be allowed to remain in NURS 248
and must withdraw from the course. Refer to I Program Medication Dosage Calculation Policy in current Nursing
Program Guidelines.
5. Didactic/Theory Evaluation: To receive a passing grade in the didactic portion of the course a student must earn
a minimum of 80% combined grade. Exam content may be derived from textbook, and classroom/online
discussions.
6. Exams: Exams: Everyone will take the exam on campus in the K building(this may change) on the designated date as
stated in Canvas. Students will not be permitted to have anything in the exam area except a see-through bottle of water,
a blank sheet of paper, 2 pencils and reliable laptops. No hats or watches will be allowed. Students are required to wear
their name badge to the exam and to show identification. Refer to Nursing Program Guidelines for “Attendance and
Preparedness Policy” related to exam absence and exam tardiness,

Note that the instructor must be contacted at least one hour prior to the exam time if there are
extenuating
circumstances interfering with the student taking the exam. Also, please, note that students who arrive late
for the exam will not receive additional time. The students that will be absent during the exam without
contacting the instructor will not be able to take the exam. Following the exams: Questions and discussions
will be entertained after exam. Other students may request an appointment with their instructor for up to

hours following the exam for a review. After that period, no other grade changes or exam discussion will be
entertained.
