Een zelfstandig gebruikt voornaamwoord vervangt een zelfstandig naamwoord, een woordgroep, of
een ander voornaamwoord. Voorbeelden van zelfstandige voornaamwoorden zijn I, you,
she en mine, yours, hers.
Een determinator is een woord dat voor een zelfstandig naamwoord staat en daar iets over vertelt of
het introduceert. Een determinator (in het Engels: determiner) wordt dus altijd samen met een
zelfstandig naamwoord gebruikt. Lidwoorden (a, the) zijn bijvoorbeeld determinatoren, en de
bijvoeglijk gebruikte voornaamwoorden my, her, this, that, some, any, each, en every ook – als ze
voor een zelfstandig naamwoord staan dus.
Kort gezegd: een zelfstandig voornaamwoord vervangt een zelfstandig naamwoord, terwijl een
determinator het introduceert.
