® ENGLISH GCSE – OF MICE & MEN

Slim
® Slim is the most respected man on the ranch and all the other
characters listen to him and follow his judgements however even
though he has such a high authority he is powerless when it comes to
preventing the tragic events of the novel
® Slim is represented as the ‘wise guy’ and is symbolic of the king or
leader ‘the prince of the ranch’. He also represents the permanent of
the men on ranches and he’s in quite an enviable position compared
tome of the other workers
® Steinbeck uses Slim as a judge figure who tells the others what’s right
and wrong and no matter what he says everyone listens to slim.
® He has connotation of God like properties such as his ‘ageless face’
and he can make any ranch worker open up to him and tell him their
problem and he always listens
® This is how we expect a God to be when we say our prayers and
1930s America people would’ve turned to religion or questioned it
because of God’s nature
® Some would be seeking help and others would be questioning God’s
motives for the great depression
® Slim throughout the novel is the person who makes the decisions, the
'judge' of the book, this does not change even at the end where he
does not condemn what George has done but just say 'you had to.’
He is fair and just and a good leader and continues to be so
throughout the novel.
QUALITIES:
Good Leader:
® Slim is immensely respected on the ranch even though he shouldn’t
be if you looked at the wealth and moral status of the characters ‘All
talk stopped when he spoke’.
® His high respect is denoted from Cooks calling him ‘Mr Slim’. Slim has
authority without demanding it and he’s described as a ‘jerkline
skinner’.
® Slim treats his fellow ranch workers with respect and so they return it to
him, unlike Curley – for example he’s one of the only characters to
call Crooks by his name whereas the rest refer to him as a ‘n*gger’,
which would’ve been normal in 1930s America.
® What makes Slim well respected and a good leader is he’s
supportive, encouraging and by far the most humble character as
compliments get thrown around about him but he doesn’t let them
