Within Web design there are user and server side factors that influence the performance of
a website. These can affect the way that a website performs depending on the factor. Some
factor affect performance more than others. In this task I will explain the different User side
and Server side factors and say which ones affect performance more than others.
User side factors
Download speed
This can affect various things such as the loading time of the website. If the user has a low
download speed, the webpage will obviously take longer to respond meaning that it will
take longer to load for the user. Recently, this isn’t a big issue as we have faster internet
connections available to us.
Cache memory
The Cache memory stored on your computer is a factor. A computer with large cache
memory will be able to store more of the temporary things that a computer needs to run.
Passwords, cookies etc are used when accessing a website. A larger Cache memory will
mean that more of these can be stored, which is result in a quicker access and improved
website performance.
Internet Browser
Internet browsers is a user side factor that influences the performance of a website. Some
internet browsers can have slower loading and download times that the others. Also, there
may be some compatibility issues with certain browsers over others. This may be some
compatibility issues with some features that the website has such as a flash animation or a
video. For example, internet explorer is becoming outdated and unsupported with newer
websites that are being developed. This means that every feature on that website won’t
work correctly with internet explorer.
Processor Speed
The Processor speed influences the performance of a website. A computer with a quick
processor will be able to perform tasks quicker than one with a slower processor. Also, a
quick processor will allow different features on the webpage to load quicker such as flash
animations or videos. This isn’t a huge issue anymore but this problem can still occur with
low end computer systems. Overall, there are some browsers that take up allot of processor
power due to the size of the browsers.
