27.1 Safety in the Microbiology Laboratory
Iedereen die met menselijk weefsels werkt heeft recht op een injectie
voor hepatitis B. De twee grootste oorzaken van infecties op het
laboratorium zijn onkunde en onvoorzichtigheid. Er zijn regels waaraan
je je moet houden. Laboratoria die met gevaarlijkere stoffen werken
hebben aangescherpte regels.
Er zijn classifiseringen voor de biohazard van de bacteriën. Laboratoria
zijn geclassifiseerd in biosafety level (BSL) genummerd van BSL-1 tot en
met BSL-4.
27.2 Healthcare-Associated Infections
Een healthcare-associated infectie (HAI) is een locale of
systematische infectie bij patienten die in een zorginstelling
zitten zoals in een ziekenhuis. HAIs worden ook wel
nosocomial(ziekenhuis) infecties. HAIs zijn meestal micro-
organismen die ook tot de normale flora behoren. De meeste
plekken waar HAIs optreden zijn in de bloedbaan, nieren en
plekken waar kortgeleden is geopereerd. Staphylococcus
aureus is de belangrijkste en meest verspreide HAI pathogeen.
Veel varianten zijn namelijk resistent tegen antibiotica. Het is
zo lastig om Enterbaacteriaceae te bestrijden omdat ze tot onze
normale flora behoren.
27.3 Direct Detection of Pathogens
Om pathogenen te onderzoeken moet er eerst van de plaats waar het zit aseptisch de bacterie
verwijderd worden, daarnaast moet de kolonie groot genoeg zijn om te groeien. Ook moeten de
metabolische condities van de bacterie bewaard blijven tijdens sampling, opslaan en transport. Als
laatste moet het monster snel bekeken worden anders heb je kans op degradatie.
De zekerheid van een diagnostisch onderzoek wordt bepaald door specificiteit en sensitiviteit.
Specificiteit is het vermogen van de test om één specifiek pathogeen te herkennen zodat je geen
vals-positieve resultaten krijgt. Sensitiviteit is de definitie van de laagste hoeveelheid waarbij een
pathogeen gedecteerd kan worden. Hierdoor voorkom je vals-negatieve uitslagen.
