weapon is in its holster and your back up weapon (if permitted by agency
policy) is secured in its holster as well. Your weapon systems should be
properly maintained, cleaned and serviced. Your weapons need regular
maintenance even if they have not been recently fired.
-Holster - -Inspect your holster for damage and to ensure it functions
properly. If your holster is damaged it could impede drawing your defensive
sidearm under stressful conditions. Further, know how your holster functions.
This muscle memory must be developed for time of extreme stress.
Remember, during critical incidents we will revert to our lowest level of
training.
-Ammunition carriers - -Inspect your ammunition carriers for damage and to
ensure they function properly. If your ammunition carriers are damaged,
magazine changes could be impeded during stressful conditions.
-Flashlight - -Keep your flashlight properly charged to ensure a long battery
life. If you own or are issued a rechargeable flashlight, you should read the
manufacturer's guide on the proper care and recharging of the battery.
-Prior to Going In-Service - -Regardless of whether you have a take home
vehicle or a motor pool vehicle, the following is a continuation of proper
preparation and should be completed prior to going in-service on patrol
