Conduct scientific analysis of physical, biological and chemical evidence
Fingerprint:
In FP1, the center loop is slightly off-center in both prints. The FP2 is taken from the broken bottle and
designated as James' right ring finger due to the 26 ridges that extend from the loop to the edge. FP2
characteristics can be seen on James' finger plate, including 16 ridges from the initial whorl to the edge.
As both FP3 and FP4 contain 15 Arches from the Centre to the top of the sample, it was determined that
they were Michael's left index finger. It is important to know this information because it provides further
evidence that Michael Wings was involved in the crime, since it confirms his presence at the household
and the possibility that he was responsible for murdering Mary Jones. This form of evidence makes it
more significant as it shows more reliable results. Further analysis, such as mass spectrometry, can be
performed to influence the importance of the data. This method can detect traces of a substance within
the ridges of a fingerprint.
Footprint:
The FTW 01 was found in the crime scene and the footwear impression was in blood. The FTW 02 was
from Kevin Black’s footwear impression and the FTW 03 was from Michael Wing’s footwear impression,
both FTW 02 and FTW 03 shows that they have no match. James Smith was present in the crime scene
as he discovered the body from the scene this does not show that he committed the murder as there
are no proof that he has murdered Mary Jones. This technique was deemed to be least significant piece
of evidence as the information from this type of evidence is not important. Further analysis can be
performed since the footwear impression from FTW 01 is from blood, a blood analysis can be performed
to determine who’s blood it belongs to as the blood can be from anyone until it is examined.
Unknown white powder:
In anion and cation analysis it has shown that WP1 sample of unknown substance was found on the
victim and WP3 sample of unknown sample was found on Michael Wing, they both have the identical
results which suggests that he was at the crime scene. WP2 sample of unknown substance found on
James Smith, WP4 sample of unknown substance found on Ashley Seller and WP5 sample of unknown
substance found on Kevin Black have no identical results in both tests. This demonstrates that an
unknown white powder may have been involved in resulting her death. This type of physical evidence
analysis may not be significant because the substance is still unknown and could be anything, but it is
possible to carry out additional analysis to improve this type of physical evidence, such as evaluating the
pH and conductivity of white powder solutions to help assess composition and examining the melting
point of the powder to help identify composition. Alternative methods, such as comparing the results to
known values of the chemical and physical properties of the substance, can also aid in the identification
of the substance.
