Pediatric Case 1: Jackson Weber
Guided Reflection Questions
Opening Questions
How did the simulated experience of Jackson Weber’s case make you feel? It was a bit nerve wracking
as I knew what to do but felt that the computer was slow to react to my instructions and felt that time
was lapsing.
Describe the actions you felt went well in this scenario. I immediately initiated safety precautions,
timed the seizure, and provided O2 as per MD’s order.
Scenario Analysis Questions1
EBP/S What priority problem did you identify for Jackson Weber? A priority problem for Jackson was
that his seizure disorders were not being managed properly at home AEB Phenobarb levels were
too low and not within the therapeutic levels and he has not seen his neurologist in 15 months.
EBP What complications might Jackson Weber face if safety precautions are not taken during the
seizure activity and if treatment is not implemented after the seizure? Jackson can sustain
injuries if seizure safety precautions are not initiated. During a seizure, Jackson could sustain
serious head injury from the jerking motion had the hospital bed not been badded. If he is not
turned to his side, he is a risk for aspiration of his saliva. If treatment were not implemented
post seizure, he is at risk for impaired gas exchanged and neurological trauma.
PCC What should the nurse teach Jackson Weber’s mother regarding the ongoing care of his
condition? Weber’s mother needs education on the importance of medication compliance, f/u
with neurologist, regular f/u for status of medication therapeutic levels, and education of
precautiosn to take during a seizure.
PCC/S What seizure precautions should be taken by the nurse in anticipation of and at the onset of
Jackson Weber’s seizure? Jackon’s bed needs to be padded, loose fitting hospital gown should
be applied, removal of toys or other objects from bed. At the onset of seizure, he needs to be
turned to his side, remove all objects from the bed, check that the gown is loose fitting, observe
the onset of seizure, duration, characteristics, and precipitating factors. How might such
precautions vary from hospital to hospital? I don’t thing that these precautions would vary from
hospital to hospital as the goal for them is always patient’s safety.
PCC/S Describe strategies to empower Jackson Weber and his mother in the management of his
seizures. Both Jackson and his mother needs to be educated on how to properly and effectively
