A good teacher plans and centers their teaching and learning according to the learning
needs of their students. A good teacher is well-prepared and aims to make learning as
fun and interesting for their students. There are various methods to teach students, and
what may work for one student may not necessarily work for the next student.
On of these methods include TPR, or Total Physical Response. This may be regarded
as a hands on approach or actively involved approach, whereby students physically act
out the language. For example, in primary school, my teacher had the students sound
out the words in order to physically see how your mouth moves when saying a specific
sound or letter. We also used our fingers to trace letters in the air, this assisted with
letter formation.
Another method is the silent way. This is a student-centered approach as students are
required to using their own thinking skills to construct meaning to a concept, like a
picture. This is very effective for initiating classroom discussions and engagements
amongst students. For example, in primary school and high school my teachers would
display an image on the board based on a topic we are dealing with. The students form
groups or pairs and come up with their own definitions and examples based on the
picture displayed. This method also allows the teacher to receive feedback on the
learners progress and understanding on the topic at hand.
It is important for lessons and methods to be multisensory to accommodate students’
various learning needs. A combination of visual and auditory aids may make lessons
more appealing, interesting, and interactive.
CLT, or Communicative Language Teaching is another method that can be used. This
method encourages students to learning through active participation and solving
problems. It allows them to think critically and independently. For example, in high
school we were often given assignments based on topics we were learning about in
class, whereby we provide our own definitions, examples and experiences based on the
topic at hand.
The above mentioned methods are methods I would use for my teaching as teacher as
they would be effective and useful.
