T William Golding wrote this novel largely based on some of his experiences from WW2 F The wide variety of age/gender and ethnic race of the people on the island make this an internationally appealing novel F Ralph becomes the leader of the island after he beats up Jack at one of the platform meetings T The conch shell becomes a symbol of leadership/authority as it is passed to the person who speaks to create a sense of order and control T Jack is introduced as a fiery young man who also exhibits some leadership qualities T Jack, Ralph and Simon go out on an adventure in search of finding out just exactly what type of landscape they have landed on T Ralph demonstrates his leadership ability by delegating the hunting duties to Jack and his group F Jack nicknames one of the boys as "Piggy" because he is always eating F The only adult on the island is Simon T Lord of the Flies is a novel written partly in response to the novel "Coral Island" written in the 1800's about 3 young boys marooned on a island T Simon optimistically declares that the boys will get back alright T "Kill the pig! Cut his throat!" Was a chant made up by the boys as they pretend to hunt. F Jack is chosen to go back to the camp in chapter 7 so that Piggy is not all alone with the littl'uns. T At the end of chapter 7 the boys in the hunting party see the "beast" (the parachuter) at the top of the mountain T Ralph enrages Jack when he calls Jack and his hunters, "boys with sticks" T For the first time, Jack blows the conch and calls a meeting in chapter 8 F Jack becomes the new chief in this meeting in chapter 8 after a new vote that goes his way F Ralph and Piggy decide to move the fire from the mountain and build a raft with the wood instead of having a fire F Near the end of chapter 8, Ralph, Piggy and Simon decide to join Jack's tribe T The head of the pig is cut off and taken as a gift for the beast on the mountain T At the end of chapter 8 Simon hears from the Lord of the Flies who calls him a silly little boy F In the beginning of chapter 9 the reader discovers the reason that Simon gets away by himself often is because he is plotting to kill Jack F Piggy is the first boy to discover that the beast is really just a dead parachuter T Jack and his hunters host a meat eating feast at their camp
