How Culture and Artistic Expressions Influence Human Thought and Behavior

Culture and artistic expressions can affect how one thinks and behaves. They can even

result in change in how one thinks and behaves. These can achieve this by triggering reflection

of culture and artifact, what they express and thus, impact one’s thoughts and behavior. A good

example is the artifact selected in this care. The cultural artifact is known as The Sugar Shack,

which is created by Ernie Barnes. This art was created in the early 1970s. It involves a group of

people with elongated limbs dancing with their eyes closed. The figures in the painting see to be

moving spontaneously and playing. Different figures have different poses that seem to be in the

process of motion. By looking at the paint, one would be excited and almost feel the music and

see the figures dancing. It shows individuals that are having fun. This artifact might influence

how people think in relation to having fun in the future. For example, the figures are seen

dancing with their eyes closed, probably focusing on their inner self and at the same time, fully

self and enjoy and at the same time be able to connect and develop relationships with others is a

though and behavior that the viewer can pick from this artifact. This is just one of the aspects of

the painting. Since individuals have different cultural lens, they would reflect and interpret the

Barnes’ art teacher Ed Wilson did teach him that he should observe his experiences in life very

closely and record them by using art (Anapur, 2022). This instruction seems to have been

effectively utilized and implemented in this artifact. The artifact was inspired by one of the

childhood experiences and memory of the artist. Barnes grew up as a shy and reserved boy and
