HOOFDSTUK 3: institutionalisering en instituties
3.1.: inleiding
Institutionalisering = proces waardoor aspecten van sociaal handelen worden gezien als
vaste en normatieve patronen
 Standaardgedragspatronen vormen zich
 Doel: eisen van omgeving vervullen
 Gevolg: sociale structuren en cultuurpatronen rond enkele belangrijke
maatschappelijke functies ontstaan
 Gevolg: ontstaan sociale instituties (zie verder)


Onderscheid 2 processen in institutionalisering:
1. Ontwikkeling van een patroon van sociale posities & relaties  sociale structuren
2. Ontwikkeling van de daarbij horende culturele elementen (kennis, waarden, normen,
producten, verwachtingen, doeleinden)


Instituties = sturingselement voor interacties, dat voor een voorspelbaar samenleven & een
geordende samenleving zorgt (+ ontstaan door mensen en hun handelen)
Sociale instituties = vast bepaald patroon van sociaal handelen en bijhorende culturele
elementen
 Kan voor een kleine of grote groep gelden of voor een hele samenleving
Bv: Belgische verkeersregels die enkel gelden in België, taalregels van Engels


Sommige instituties zijn voor bepaalde situaties
Bv: rechtbank, school, gemeentehuis


Onderscheid primaire & secundaire instituties (Malinowski):
o Primaire instituties: alle instituties voor reproductieve, intimiteits- en materiële
behoeften & bescherming, verdediging, trainen en opleiden
Bv: gezin, onderwijs, economie


o Secundaire instituties: alle instituties die tot de onderlinge afstemming & integratie
leiden van de primaire instituties
Bv: politieke organisaties, justitie, religieuze systemen

, Instituties zorgen voor stabiliteit & zekerheid door die stabiliteit


Reïficatie = instituties lijken op zichzelf te bestaan (maar: mens heeft die gecreëerd)


Institutionele discriminatie  discriminerend gedrag in de werking van instituties


De-institutionalisering = instituties die wijzigen onder invloed van menselijk gedrag


Cultuurverandering = oude manieren van denken en handelen verdwijnen & worden
vervangen door nieuwe


3.2.: voorbeelden van instituties (3)
1: gezin
Families hebben meestal verwantschapsbanden (verbonden door bloedband, adoptie of
huwelijk)
Gezin  complexer dan enkel bloedbanden
= personen in eenzelfde wooneenheid
Basistypen gezin:
o Kerngezin (nuclear family): echtgenoten (+ kinderen, als die er zijn)
o Uitgebreide gezin (extended family): kerngezin + samenwonende verwanten



Oriëntatiegezin = gezin waarin iemand opgroeit
Gezin is cultureel, niet biologisch  culturen hebben andere vormen van gezin
Gezin  primaire institutie of sleutelinstitutie
