ARTICLE 1: Student motivations for studying criminology: A narrative inquiry
Introduction. This article discusses the use of narrative enquiry to explain the increase in
students’ studying criminology, their motivation to study the topic, and the link between their past
experiences and any future aspirations. My review will discuss the strengths and limitations of this
article to determine its reliability as a secondary form of research for other criminologists. The
impact factor for the chosen article is 2.672 and the authors published the paper on a reputable
provider of high-quality, innovative content, called SAGE Journals.
Expertise of The Author. The two authors of this article are Julie Trebilcock and Clare

Academic Writing. The article is written clearly and concisely using a formal tone and style
to aid the readers understanding. An example of this is the authors use of subheadings to separate
each different section within this paper; each section provides a distinct but natural flow between
each point of discussion and in-text citations are used frequently throughout the whole paper to
support any references made. The article also opens with a very informative introduction;
immediately gaining the reader’s attention by referring to relevant facts, for example, ‘The number
of students studying criminology has significantly increased’ following citations to support this fact.
The introduction also informs the reader of where and how research was undertaken and their
justification behind the decision. The conclusion to this article is structured as a more in-depth
discussion by referring to the purpose of the study - students past and future aspirations in relation
to the motivation behind them studying criminology – and the findings. The authors also explain the
