ANSWER Hello, Dr. Drescher and Class, Etiology The pylorus is the lower portion of the stomach that connects the small intestine. Pyloric stenosis is when muscles in this part of the stomach become enlarged , narrowing the opening of the pylorus preventing food from moving into the intestine . The cause of enlargment is unknown however there are both environmental and genetic factors that contribute to the development of the disease. According to McCane & Huether (2014), during the last trimester of pregnancy the maternal stress can cause an increase in gastric secretions in the fetus leading leading to the development of the disease. It is also believed that administration of prostaglandin E is a contributor as well (McCance & Huether, 2014). Pathophysiology In pyloric stenosis the muscle layer of the pylorus enlarges due to hypertrophy and hyperplasia which causes the narrowing of the gastric antrum. In the McCane & Huether (2014) readings the mucosal lining of the pyloric m uscle opening will fold and narrow the lume n which causes an increase in peristalsis to move the stomach contents through the narrowing passageway which causes the stomach to enlarge (McCance & Huether, 2014). The pyloric canal becomes lengthened, and the whole pylorus becomes thickened. The mucosa is usually edematous and
