2.2 Outline the concept of Holistic Development and 2.3 Explain how Holistic Development is
Facilitated through Forest School.

An educator needs to be able to facilitate the learning of the individual as-a-whole by
incorporating and fostering the following abilities:
❖ Physical Development
❖ Intellectual Development
❖ Emotional Intelligence
❖ Social Intelligence
❖ Communication
❖ Cultural Intelligence
❖ Moral / Spiritual Development
By working towards satisfying all of these needs, sometimes simultaneously sometimes
individually, we begin to develop the child or young person as a whole and help them
transition into well adjusted, productive and positive contributors to society.
This can be achieved by following SPICES model:
SPICES:
S: social. To be able to make a positive contribution to community and society through
developing effective social skills, empathy, and respect.
P: physical. Understanding how their bodies work, and what they are capable of, how to
move freely and to manage risk.
I: intellectual. To think and question, to be curious about the world around them. To express
themselves and to learn from others. To understand and use language and solve problems.
C: creativity. To be able to think creatively and express themselves freely. To consider new
ideas and concepts.
E: emotional. To develop emotional intelligence. To have self-confidence, self-awareness,
resilience, and empathy and to be determined and motivated to succeed.

S: spiritual. To be able to choose right instead of wrong. To appreciate, respect and equality.
To be inspired and inquisitive. To develop an understanding of who they are, what is unique
about them, and their place in the world.

Some ways of achieving SPICES are listed in the table below:
