CNUR 103 Final
Unit 1: Holistic Nursing

Terminology

Compassion: emotion evoked by suffering of others, a strength that allows one person to connect with
another to acknowledge that suffering, and desire to ease the accompanying pain

Compassion fatigue: distress that accumulates over time after continuous exposure to caregiving
situations that are interpreted as traumatic – effects may be physical, emotional, moral, spiritual, and
intellectual

Empathy: ability to truly know another person within a trusting, mutually respectful relationship – most
essential element of emotional intelligence that one must have to care for another person

Holistic nursing: aims to heal whole person and draws on nursing knowledge, theories, expertise and
intuition to guide nurses in becoming therapeutic partners with people in their care – recognizes totality
of human beings – interconnectedness of body, mind, emotion, spirit, social/cultural factors,
relationship, context, and environment

Relational practice: art and skill of being able to connect with people across differences by joining with
them as they are and where they are

Spirituality: existential construct inclusive of all the ways in which a person makes meaning and
organizes sense of self around a personal set of beliefs, values, and relationships – sometimes
understood in terms of transcendence or inspiration – involvement of community of faith and practice
may be a part of an individual’s spirituality
