1984 – Book 3, Chapter 6
Winston is drunk and alone in the Chestnut Tree Café, waiting for the news.
“Oceania is at war with Eurasia: Oceania has always been at war with
Eurasia.” He recalls meeting Julia in the park – they’ve both betrayed each
other. They felt nothing for each other. He remembers his mother and sister
for the last time. New of military victory in Africa fills him with joy, as does
the thought of his execution. He loves Big Brother.
“The news from the African front was disquieting in the extreme. On
and off he had been worrying about it all day.” (p. 331)
Winston previously didn’t care about the results of the war, since he knew they
were lies
“There was no need to give orders. They knew his habits. … He never
even bothered to count his drinks” (p. 332)
Winston has become a habitual, drunk creature satisfied in being subservient
and following the status quo.
“Almost unconsciously he traced with his finger in the dust on the
table: 2+2=5” (p. 334)
First example of the Party’s anti-logic being engrained in Winston’s mind
“She made no response whatever to the clasp of his arm; she did not
even try to dis- engage herself.” (p. 335)
Julia feels nothing towards Winston
“It was only a momentary glance, full of contempt and dislike.” (p.
336)
