As of today, there are currently 25 million Muslims estimated to be living in the countries of

the European Union (EU). Often times, the presence of Muslims have managed to spark

controversy, fear, debate and even hatred. This has caused Muslims to think that majority of

the Europeans avoid their presence and make a mockery of Islam. In the TED Talk ‘What it’s

like to be a Muslim in America’, Dalia Mogahed explores how some people perceive

Muslims as a threat to the America and how the misconception became established in

America. Meanwhile, Bichara Khader explains the situation of how most Europeans dislike

their presence and belittle Islam. The stereotyping of Muslims as being violent terrorists is a

dangerous perception that further isolate and discriminate them from economic and social

integration in Europe. Muslims are recognised as a threat to national identity, domestic

security and the social fabric of Europe.




Islamophobia can not only be an act of fear of the religion and Muslims, but it can also relate

to how it can be a tool of public manipulation, eroding the foundation of a free society. As

Mogahed explained with Muslims, it is those who are persistently ignored by society who end

up becoming “exploited by extremists.” This alliteration captivates the verb choice “exploited”,

suggesting that radical terrorists procure from the situation. Mogahed makes a strong argument

throughout her speech that this abused position stems from people being socially excluded. For

instance, Mogahed explains that in communities will lead to populations becoming “more

accepting of conformity, prejudice and authoritarianism.” The rule of three here implies the

brutality of such influence that could damage European democracy, social development and

freedom. The Muslims living in Europe generally fall into four classifications: local Muslims

whose ancestors have stayed in Europe, businessmen and students who are from Muslim
