and visions.

What should managers think and say…

Know where you are and what you are This could seem instructive, but was far a long time seen
doing at all times during working as a manager prerogative/right and may still be wat
hours. happens in some organizations.
Not criticize or praise. Most people enjoy occasional praise.
Not interfere in disagreements Criticism must be constructive and not degenerate into
between members of staff. bullying.

not prepared to do themselves. resolve in some disputes.
Be available at all times to give staff Some companies have an ‘open door’ policy and
advice and support encourage employees to make comments and pursue
grievances to the highest level. Others would not
encourage this. ‘At all times’ might mean being able to
phone you manager at home until late in the evening,
but in many places, there is a strict division between
home and work and you would not be able to do this.
Keep their distance from staff and not There are probably two types of basic managers: those

be a cultural thing.
Use polite language at all times. Probably good idea in theory, but many organizations

Leadership styles

Autocratic Someone who makes decisions and give orders to people without asking
them for their opinion.

You rarely consult your team members and, instead, tend to tell them what
you want, when you want it, and how you want it done.

This style works well in a crisis, when a task must be completed quickly.
However, you’ll likely demoralize, demotivate and aggravate people If you
use it all the time. This can translate into high absenteeism and turnover
rates. You’ll as miss out a wealth of ideas, thereby stifling innovation and
creativity.

Democratic Organization according to the principle that everyone has a right to be
involved in making decisions.

You tend to set the parameters for the work and have the final say on
decisions, but you actively involve your team members in the process.

This style can build trust between you and your people, as they’ll likely feel
engaged and valued. But it’s not great in a high-pressure situation that
requires a fast turnaround, as it will slow you down. And, if you dislike
disagreement or conflict, you might struggle with how people respond to
consultation.

Laissez-faire The principle that a organization should allow to business to develop without
any state control or influence.

You give your team members free rein in how they work toward their goals.

This is an ideal approach when your people are highly skilled and motivated,
and when you’re working with contractors and freelancers who you trust. But
if a team member is inexperienced or untrustworthy, or if you lose sight of
what’s going on, this approach can backfire catastrophically.
