KOEPPEN’S SCHEME OF CLASSIFICATION ON CLIMATE


1. Wladimir peter Koeppen develop his ‘empirical’ climatic classification
scheme in 1918. [Observation of data]


2. He identified a close relationship between the distribution of Vegetation
and climate.


3. He selected certain values of temperature and precipitation and related
them to the distribution of vegetation and used the value for classifying
the climate.




4. It is an empirical classification based on mean annual and mean monthly
temperature and precipitation data

5. He also introduced the use of capital and small letters to designate
climate group and types.

6. The capital letter A,C,D,E delineate humid climate whereas, B refers to
dry climate.

7. He recognises 5 major climatic groups, four of them are based on
temperature and remaining one on the basis of precipitation.
