What is a positive - Positive symptoms is a behaviours that is added (in addition) to an already existing
symptom? behaviours.
- There are 3 types of positive symptoms.
Hallucinations - Is a faulty perception where the individual beliefs that they are hearing (auditory) or
seeing (visual) something that is not real.
- The most common type of hallucinations is auditory hallucinations, an example of this
is the sz’s hearing the dead voice of their mother.
Delusions (and two - A delusion is a faulty belief that the schizophrenic beliefs to be true, there are 3 main
types) types of delusions.
- Delusions of grandeur, such as believing that they are god (belief that they are
powerful and important)
- Delusions of persecution, this is the belief that they are in danger (for example MI5 are
using pigeons to spy on them.
- Erotomania (belief that someone famous is in love with them
Disordered - A faulty thought process, that the sz believes to be true.

- Thought withdrawal – thoughts are being removed; the doctors have removed my
thoughts
- Thought broadcasting- everyone can hear their thoughts.

Poverty of speech - Know as alogia, where the speech of the sz declines, it can result in minimal verbal
communications such as just yes and no responses or no response at all
Flattening effect - Know as anhedonia, this is where the sz emotions decline, it can result in the sz not
feeling any emotions as well as resulting in them not completing hobbies that they use
to enjoy.
Social withdrawal - Known as avolition, this is where the sz removes themselves from the wider world, this
can result in them not seeing their family or not leaving their house.
Catatonic - Repetitive movements and behaviour such as dancing on the same spot for a long
behaviour period of time, or the diminution of movement.
