considering side/adverse effects, implications, and necessary teaching.
You will apply principles of health promotion and injury prevention, to

Pharmacology – Primary Focus
Anything that affects the physiologic process in the body is defined as a
drug. Pharmacology is the study or science of drugs. While there is a lot
of information to study, most of the important focus is on the absorption,

,distribution, effect, and excretion. These factors will affect how, when,
where, and why a drug is given.

The Principles of Pharmacokinetics

 Absorption: How it gets in
 Distribution: How it is delivered
 Metabolism: How it is broken down
 Excretion: How we get rid of it

,Drug Naming Convention
Each drug has three names. The chemical name, the generic name, and
the trade name. The chemical name describes the drugs molecular
structure. The generic name is often shorter and simpler than the
chemical name and is used to identify the drug. Trade or brand name is a
proprietary name that is usually registered by the pharmaceutical
company for the purposes of marketing.
It is important to know common proprietary names because these are
often used by patients and healthcare providers in communicating what
they are on. When a drug is newly approved, it is often sold under a
patent for the life of the patent (about 17 years). During that time the
drug can only usually be purchased through that company. After the
patent expires, the drug is then approved to be produced by anyone. This
is when a generic version of the drug are sold. However, it is important to
know the generic name of every drug has many times, the generic name
gives you a clue to what drug class it may be with.
For example, the high blood pressure drug called amlodipine is a calcium
channel blocker because like other calcium channel blockers, it ends with
“pine”. You would not know that if you heard the drug’s trade name
Norvasc.

chlorophenyl)-1,4-dihydro-6-methyl-3,5-pyridinedicarboxylate, monobenz
enesulphonate

More on Drug Naming
Pharmaceutical companies will sometimes take a generic drug, and
improve the delivery, timing, or other pharmacologic properties. For
example a drug that needs to be taken three times daily will be updated
by a company by being put in an extended release capsule. When this is
done, often a company will change the brand name to something
different. For example the drug Procardia, a blood pressure medication,
was marketed as Procardia XL. This was simply a sustained release
version of the drug Procardia.
Pharmaceutical companies will also combine drugs and market them
under a different name. For example the drug losartan was combined
