Title Othello by William Sheakspeare
Escapist/Formulaic or Escapist fiction
Imaginative fiction?
Plot Othello, the governor of Venice, marries Desdemona, the girl whom Roderigo
loves, in secret. Iago hates Othello and promises Roderigo he will help him get with
Desdemona. They tell the father of Desdemona (Brabantio) has run away and
Othello must have used witchcraft to make Desdemona fall in love with him (he is
black so she wouldn’t fall for him on his own). Othello has to go on a mission in
Cyprus and asks Iago to bring Desdemona after him. Cassio gets his rank taken
from Othello for being drunk (Iago made him drunk) and asks Desdemona for help.
Iago says Desdemona is cheating with Cassio to make him jealous. Othello drops
her handkerchief on the ground because he is angry with her. Iago’s wife, Emilia,
steals it and gives it to Iago. He plants it in the room of Cassio to raise suspicion,
Cassio gives it to prostitute named Bianca. Later Iago is talking to Cassio about
Bianca, Othello thinks it is about Desdemona. On top of that Bianca comes to give
the handkerchief back, Othello is furious (slowly gets mad, has an epileptic episode
because of it). Roderigo and Iago plan to kill Cassio so that Desdemona cannot
leave the island and Roderigo has a change with her. Cassia and Roderigo wound
each other. Roderigo gets killed by somebody else. Othello kills Desdemona for
cheating on him. Emilia tells everything and therefore gets killed by Iago. Othello
kills himself after finding out his wife didn’t cheat on him. Iago is arrested and
Cassio becomes the governor of Cyprus.
Exposition (The background information is provided by Iago and Roderigo
talking; Othello and Desdemona are secretly getting married, Iago hates
Othello, Roderigo is in love with Desdemona, a plan is developed (Iago is
going to help Roderigo win Desdemona over))
Rising action (During the mission in Cyprus, Othello is convinced by Iago
that his wife is cheating with Cassio (talking about Bianca, the handkerchief,
Cassio talking to Desdemona for help to get his position back))
Climax (Iago’s plan works; Othello says he is going to kill Desdemona, not
the end because how will he do it and when? Will Iago get away with his
actions?)
Denouement (Desdemona gets killed, Roderigo is already killed, then
Emilia gets killed. Lastly Othello kills himself and Iago is arrested)
Conclusion (Cassio survives and becomes governor of Cyprus, Iago does
