Introduction

I nstructors in the allied health field often face a formidable challenge due primarily to time constraints.
There is an ever expanding base of knowledge to be covered in the same amount of time. This
instructor’s manual is designed to be used in conjunction with the textbook Basic Allied Health Statistics
and Analysis 4e, and to serve as supplementary material for the instructor’s use in preparing for
classroom teaching. The goal of the instructor’s manual is to help make the best possible use of Basic
Allied Health Statistics and Analysis, 4e. The intent of the textbook is to be comprehensive yet not
overwhelming, and to be self-instructive by providing many self tests to assess comprehension of the
material. Through the acquisition of computational skills developed through problem solving and aided
by the enthusiasm and motivation provided by the instructor, the student should be prepared to pass the
national exam and to meet eventual career challenges.
Since skills are best developed through actual performance and practice, the book was designed to
provide students with a wide variety of computational problems. Each chapter in the text includes an
outline, learning objectives, terms and formulas as appropriate, examples following the topic presented,
self-tests and exams to assess understanding of the material presented, a summary at the end of each
chapter, and a chapter test. The book also includes a comprehensive final exam. We have also included
the Certification Connection Mapping Grid that indicates how the book maps to RHIA/RHIT Standards.
Depending upon time constraints, basic allied health statistics may be offered as a semester course or
may be incorporated as a unit within another course. The pressure of time is a constant factor. Students
also possess diverse educational backgrounds, yet the instructor needs to challenge each and every
student and help them attain a certain level of knowledge, skill and understanding. Many students
entering the allied health field are not recent high school graduates but adults looking for a new
challenge. The task of the instructor is to help students attain a certain level of knowledge,
understanding, and expertise regarding health care statistics, and to prepare them to achieve their
educational and career goals.

Course Schedule

No suggested course schedule is provided or included since many programs will only incorporate certain
chapters of the textbook. The material in the text does not necessarily need to be introduced in the order
in which it is presented in the textbook; some instructors may choose to reorder chapters or even
sections within a chapter, other instructors may choose to omit certain topics or chapters. The text and
the instructor’s manual are intended to assist the instructor in course preparation. Although no book can
possibly satisfy all the needs of every instructor, it is hoped that the revised edition of the textbook and
the accompanying instructor’s manual, Cognero computerized test bank, and PowerPoint presentation
will aid you, the instructor, in course preparation and instruction.

Instructor’s Manual

The instructor’s manual provides the instructor with additional questions for each chapter to be used as
an additional classroom practice problems, to serve as an assignment to be handed in, or as a basis for
questions to incorporate into quizzes or an exam. Also provided is a final exam for an additional testing
option. A variety of questions have been presented including multiple choice and computational
questions. Some questions may seem redundant but are included for the sake of variety. A question may
be used as stated or altered to meet the instructor’s goals, and will ideally serve as a starting point for
