Understanding these concepts will enable the nurse to assess the various elements of a particular concept to benefit the patient. By using concept analysis, the development of conceptual framework, research studies and theories are being identified. Nursing theory guide nursing interventions, and provide a framework for measuring outcomes by explaining the why and how of nursing practice ( Schaffer, Sandau, & Missal, 2017). The selected nursing concept will be Self-care. The self-care concept was introduced as an element of nursing theory by Dorothea Orem. This paper will discuss the definition/explanation of self-care along with its use in Dorothea Orem’s Self-Care nursing theory. A literature review with supporting scholarly references to help identify themes, ideas and facts. Defining attributes, an antecedent, a consequence, empirical referents and construct cases will also be presented. Finally, a discussion on theoretical application of the concept of self-care and its relationship to theory will conclude this paper.
