Setting
The Theory of Flight is a story set in an unnamed country in the southern regions of
Africa. While the location is not mentioned, it can be assumed that the story is set in
Zimbabwe (formerly known as Rhodesia). The events such as Victoria Falls, Bob
Marley’s performance at the independence celebration, the shooting of the Viscount by
rebels, operation gukurahundi (the annihilation of Matabele people in rural areas of
Zimbabwe), links the story’s setting to Zimbabwe/Rhodesia.
