Why are these characters upset? - ANSWER The sources of tension in the first scene are initiated by Sampson and Gregory. Sampson and Gregory are of the Capulet house, and were willing to fight any Montague men. Sampson "bit his thumb", or in essence, flicked Abram (of Montague house). From there, the quarreling went back and forth. These characters are upset because Prince Escalus breaks up their "quarrel", in front of the townspeople. How does Romeo describe the woman he loves in Scene 1? Refer to things like word choice, connotation, tone, figures of speech, and so on. - ANSWER Romeo tells Benvolio (his cousin) how much pain he is in because he loves Rosaline and she doesn't love him back. Romeo refers to how "She'll not be hit With Cupid's arrow." (Page 23). Basically, Rosaline refuses to marry, not only Romeo, but anyone. She is pledging a life to not have sex, and Romeo merely just wants her for her looks. Romeo's tone is very sorrowful, and he uses oxymorons to describe his feelings towards love.
