Everything about the NHS
Things to include:

NHS Core Values

6 C’s of the NHS

NHS structure

Problems with the NHS currently facing

Which parts of the NHS may need more funding

NHS Core Values:

Respect and dignity

Having respect for patients and treating them well, regardless of
background, such as age, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation etc.

Could talk about the NHS Long Term Plan, how one plan is to increase
funding in community work, so that patients from areas of lower GP
access and areas with higher rates of smoking for example, are able to
access the appropriate healthcare- talk about Be Well and community
health checks

Being aware of cultural nuances, and treating each patient with respect
and dignity, not undermining their beliefs or values- this links to patient
autonomy and the right for patients to have a say in their health care.

Confidentiality- how patient confidentiality is incredibly important in
maintaining dignity of patients, even after they die

Autonomy and informed consent- respecting a patient’s right of
autonomy of their healthcare and this can be achieved through
informed consent of the procedure, so that the patient has a better idea
of the treatment that they would go through, and therefore, they are
able to make a decision based on the information provided.

Everything about the NHS 1

, Commitment to quality of care

Doctors and healthcare professionals should always strive to deliver the
best quality of care

Continuous evaluation, improvement and re evaluation of services
provided by the NHS

Auditing processes and re evaluation- once a medical student qualifies
as a junior doctor, they have to take part in a clinical audit at least once
a year. Auditing involves picking a particular part of the hospital/GP’s
services, for example, diabetes care. You would then work with your
MDT and also use set guidelines, whether that be from NICE or the
GMC, in order to see what the standard should be. Then collect data
and compare to this standard.

Revalidation of doctors- where doctors are consistently given
appraisals, which is where a senior doctor, acting as a responsible
officer, and then they give a recommendation about the doctors fitness
to practice to the GMC.

Continual professional development- doctors should be willing to
constantly learn and develop their clinical skills and knowledge, as well
as improvement in other factors of health care, such as communication
and teamwork. 250 hrs. every 5 years of work dedicated to CPD is
required by the GMC, and this can include attending seminars or
workshops dedicated to improving a certain skill etc.

Good Medical Practice- Domain 1- Knowledge, skills and performance-
“You must take steps to maintain and improve your competence and
performance”.

Domain 2- safety and quality- making sure you take part in auditing
processes and revalidation.

Patient safety is referenced 12 times across the Good Medical Practice
Handbook, and quality of care is incredibly important when it comes to
patient safety- maybe reference the Shropshire Maternity Scandal-
many unnecessary still births and deaths could have been prevented
with correct care.

Care Quality Commission- organizational body in the UK that evaluates
and judges how different services across the NHS are run
