Best Point - Themes
I believe that one method both poets use is similar themes including: the batle between youth
and age; memory; innocence versus experience – which could also be interpreted as age against
youth as well as how beauty is defned by the rest of society; and material and physical items as
opposed to the sentmental value of things. For example, the diferences between each generaton
are shown in ‘Urn on a Grayson Perry Urn’ through how the modern day society has become
obsessed with the materialistc values of items and objects, as well as vanites, which is emphasised
through the endless references to branding and specifc objects that are made to ‘improve’
someone’s looks, whilst the older generaton ‘telephone the cops to plead for quiet, sue for peace’,
possibly implying that they don’t see the need for the youthful rebellion, and wish for society to
revert back to their era of tranquillity and a division between the rich and the poor. ‘My Nine-Year-
Old Self’ shows this division of the ages by how the child ‘would rather run than walk, rather climb
than run, rather leap from a height than anything’, contrastng with how the adult is careful of
moving in fear of causing a bad back injury or bruising a foot; this indicates to the reader that the
child is stll innocent in the way they look at life, as opposed to how the adult is asking for the child
to slow down (which is shown by the speaker refers to the same person –oneself - as two diferent
people, and not as one person from two tmes).
Worst Point – use of exclamatve/ declaratve
The use of both the declaratve and exclamatve in ‘Ode on a Grayson Perry Urn’ helps to
emphasise youth, and the excitement and fast-pace life of the teenagers and younger generaton
stated in the poem, whilst it also contrasts this by being used to show the adults and older
generaton patronising the youth, shown through the frst line, where the speaker starts with the
rhetorical queston ‘What’s all this here?’, which could possibly suggest that the speaker is a part of
the older generaton, and is laughing or is incredulous regarding the way the youth acts and sees
things – possibly what could be seen as trivial things such as the defniton of beauty or peer
pressure. The exclamatve and declaratve are also used in ‘To my Nine-Year-Old Self’, which uses
them for similar reasons as ‘Ode’: to show the diference in the ages, and how innocence is more
prominent in childhood, whilst that is lost through the years, and fear replaces that.
