,El sistema endocrino es un
conjunto de glándulas cuya
función especial es la producción
Endo = dentro
y secreción de sustancias Krinein = secretar
llamadas hormonas que entran
directamente en la circulación o
corriente sanguínea. Al ser
transportadas por la circulación,
las hormonas llegan hasta los
tejidos donde harán su efecto Hormona:
(comúnmente denominados Mensajeros quimicos
tejidos u órganos blanco o diana) del cuerpo humano
donde actúan sobre ellos para
regular y modificar sus funciones.
Las hormonas tienen funciones específicas tales como regular el
crecimiento, el metabolismo, la temperatura y el desarrollo de los
órganos reproductivos. Así como el sistema nervioso, el sistema
endocrino trabaja como una vía de señalización, aunque las
hormonas tienen una acción más lenta que los impulsos
nerviosos, y pueden tardar típicamente desde algunas horas hasta
algunas semanas.
El principal centro de control de los órganos del sistema
endocrino es el hipotálamo en el cerebro. Todas las señales del
hipotálamo llegan a la hipófisis (glándula pituitaria), la cual en
respuesta secreta sus propias hormonas que afectan
prácticamente a todas las glándulas del cuerpo humano, razón
por la cual a veces se conoce como la “glándula maestra”. Se
puede entender entonces al sistema endocrino como un bucle
que empieza con el hipotálamo, continúa en la hipófisis, continúa
en las glándulas endocrinas del cuerpo (por ejemplo, la glándula
tiroides), las cuales a su vez informan al hipotálamo sobre su
función, y completan el bucle. La rama de la medicina que se
encarga del estudio del sistema endocrino es la Endocrinología.

sistema endocrino en general.
El sistema endocrino tiene tres puntos funcionales principales:

Estos tres componentes constituyen lo que se conoce como el
eje hipotálamo-hipofisario-glandular.
