Las mamas se encuentran en la pared torácica anterior, anteriores a la fascia profunda
y a los músculos pectorales, y separadas de estos por el espacio retromamario. Una de
las partes de la mama se puede extender a través del borde inferolateral del músculo
pectoral mayor hasta llegar a la axila, formando el proceso axilar o cola de Spence,
cuyo tamaño puede aumentar de acuerdo con la fase del ciclo menstrual.
Son glándulas túbulo-alveolares de secreción externa, consideradas embriológicamente
como glándulas sudoríparas modificadas en su estructura y función Formada por 15 a 20
lóbulos, que se dividen en lobulillos y a su vez en pequeños racimos.
15 a 25 conductos hacia el pezón.
Está irrigada por las arterias torácica
interna que proviene de la subclavia, lateral y toraco abdominal (axilar), intercostales
posteriores (aorta).
Drenaje linfático: plexo linfático subareolar, el cual drena a los ganglios linfáticos
axilares.
