Asperger's
High functioning Autism. Excel in academics, know about all about a particular interest
and obsess over it, lack street smarts, do not understand idioms, humor, bullying, etc.
May require Special Ed because of their social and behavior abilities. They continue to
live at home. May develop depression and mood disorders. Asperger's is NOT included
in the DSMIV.
Dr. Leo Kanner
First identified the constellation of characteristics of Autism in 1943.
"Refrigerator Mothers"
Theory that many believed that the cause of Autism was because of the lack of
maternal warmth amongst parents during the time period 1950's - 1970's. Mothers of
Autistic children were said to have been inadequate mothers which increased
depression rates.
Dr. Hans Asperger
Identified Asperger disorder in 1944.
Bernard Rimland
Wrote an article "Infantile Autism" in 1965. It stated that Autism is a biological disorder.
He soon after created the Autism Institute Research Center in 1967.
1980
Autism was officially apart of the DSMIV. Rain Man was released, first time millions was
introduced to Autism.
Possible Cause of Autism
There is no known cause of Autism. Some believe there are genetic components,
hereditary, medical, vaccines, diet, etc.
Characteristics of Autism
Hyperlexia, echoic, excess or frequent tantrums, movie talk/scripting, highly self-
restricted diets, and repetitive movements.
Echoic
Repeat words or phrases rather than engage in conversation.
Movie talk/ scripting
Must watch part of movie again and again.
Early signs of Autism
No big smiles, no babbling by 12 months, no words by 24 months, repetitive movements
or objects.
Impact on family
Changes direction of life, strain on marriage, taking care and balancing other children,
hesitate to take part of leisure activities, parents overwhelmed by knowledge they have
to learn, etc.
Biomedical Treatments
Gluten and casein free diets, dietary supplements, chelation therapy, and hyperbaric
oxygen therapy.
