I DISAGREE: People with disabilities should NOT be treated the same way as people
without disabilities.
In considering whether people with disabilities should be treated the same way as those
without disabilities, I would disagree with the notion that they should be treated
identically. There are several compelling reasons why accommodations and tailored support
are necessary for individuals with disabilities to thrive in higher education and beyond.
Firstly, students with disabilities often face unique challenges and barriers that their peers
without disabilities do not encounter. As highlighted in Text A, the transition from high
school to college can be particularly daunting for students with disabilities, who may not
receive the necessary support and accommodations to navigate this transition successfully.
Research, such as that conducted by (Francis et al. 2022), underscores the disempowerment
experienced by individuals with disabilities due to factors like discouragement, humiliation,
insecurity, isolation, and repeated cycles of disempowerment. This indicates that treating
them the same as students without disabilities overlooks the additional hurdles they must
overcome.
Secondly, legal frameworks such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) recognize the
need for reasonable accommodations to ensure equal access and opportunity for individuals
