According to Vuille et al. (2018), commonly encountered in a health care setting, pain often becomes the single chief reason for an ED admission. It is interesting to note that many cases in the ED involve moderate to severe pain. This applies to patients undergoing surgery often experiencing of acute pain. The issue of chronic pain is a serious global health problem that
is ranked third in the list of global problems. It impacts physical, emotional and social wellness in all health domains. The consequences are devastating, leaving a great impact on a person’s Quality of Life (Vuille et al., 2018).
Inadequate pain management refers to patients who do not receive appropriate relief from
their pain, which causes prolongation of discomfort and reduction in quality of life (Fishman, 2021). There are a number of factors that lead to inadequate pain management; these issues often
represent larger challenges within healthcare systems and individual patient-care provider relationships. One of the key factors is underestimation of pain. In some cases, healthcare providers do not have enough time to conduct a detailed pain survey or they do not possess adequate tools. This may lead to an incomplete appreciation of the nature and degree of pain which may result in a poor treatment plan (Seers et al., 2018).
Underprescribing of pain medication is another causal factor. Fears of abuse, dependency, or adverse events might cause the healthcare providers to be hesitant when prescribing adequate analgesia. Although these issues are true, however, some balance must be drawn in order to ensure that enough drugs is administered on the patients to effectively manage the pain (Gudmundsdottir, et al., 2023).
