OL Lab 13: Protein Synthesis Part 2: Report and Reflection Purpose: Describe in complete sentences and in your own words, the purpose of this experiment. The purpose of this experiment is to lear n about the protein synthesis process. The purpose was to also learn about the devices used to test samples of urine in the lab, to decide whether illicit drugs were being used by athletes to enhance their performance. Observations: Record three observations from the simulation. I learned that ACTG is found in DNA and that ACUG is found in mRNA. I observed that the difference between transcription and translation was explained in detail for a full understanding. I also observed that amino acids are linked by specific types of peptide bonds Answer the questions below: In your own words, describe the process of gene expression beginning from the nucleus to the formation of the polypeptide sequence. Gene expression is the mechanism by which the data encoded in a gene is used to guide a protein molecule's assembly. Also in groups of three bases, the cell reads the sequence of the gene. It takes place in two phases which are encoding and translation. Transcription is the delivery of genetic instructions to the nucleus from DNA to mRNA. Three stages are included, which are initiation elongation and termination. Complete the table below: Nucleic acid Amine Bases Present Location(s) in cell DNA ACGT Nucleus RNA ACGU Nucleotides • Assume that RNA Polymerase will read the parental strand of DNA given here and write the mRNA sequence that would result: - TATGCTTCCGTA - AUACGAAGGCAU • Reflection: Consider what you learned from this simulation. Reflect on three to four key concepts that you learned in this lab exercise. How could the lessons learned in this virtual lab relate to a real-world situation in the community/world or your future career? Be specific in your answer (this should require 5-10 sentences). This lab simulation taught me the importance of DNA coding and RNA coding which would be helpful in my future career as a nurse. Specifically if working in a genetic testing facility or when in need of helping to cure genetic disorders. This special type of coding can help with family matching and pharmaceutical matching of certain drugs to the ill patient. The valuable knowledge of protein synthesis and breakdown was also a key concept in relation to when it is used in dieting and nutrition preparation. I also learned that there is no way around using illegal or recreational drugs for performance enhancement because there is mandatory testing and when samples are analyzed the true result will be revealed.
