Field trips have been regarded as one of the teaching strategies that teachers can
use real-life experiences to expose learners to concepts learnt in class. Although
field trips have not been exclusively linked to better learning, they remain one of
the most successful methods of inspiring learners to enjoy the subject (Diphoko
et al. 2016: 67). As a future Tourism teacher, it is essential that you plan to
include at least one field trip a year as part of your Tourism teaching activities,
either with one grade or all your FET grades. For this assessment task, you are
expected to plan a field trip for your Tourism learners. Choose an attraction,
establishment or destination, linked to the Grade 11 curriculum, and draft the
proposed field trip. You should include the following information:
1. Name of the attraction, establishment or destination and a brief description of
the proposed field trip location/site.
2. Your reasons as to why you chose this particular location (e.g., close to school,
environmentally significant or educational site).
3. A plan of action, detailing what you need to take care of before the field trip
can commence (for example: cost estimation or transport and permissions from
parents and field site manager).
4. You should include 3 letters which will be sent to different stakeholders as
follows:
a. Letter to the principal or HOD, requesting permission to take learners on the
proposed field trip (include information regarding the purpose of the trip, date,
time, cost, etc.).
Field Trip Proposal: Exploring Cape Town's Vibrant Tourism Industry
1. Name of the Attraction & Description:
This field trip will take Grade 11 Tourism learners to explore various aspects of Cape
Town's tourism industry. The itinerary will include visits to:
• V&A Waterfront: A bustling waterfront precinct showcasing diverse tourism
offerings, including restaurants, shops, historical sites, and harbor tours.
• Robben Island: A UNESCO World Heritage Site with a rich history of
imprisonment and struggle for freedom. It offers valuable insight into South
Africa's past and its impact on tourism.
