Thermal Energy - ANSWER-the total energy of all the atoms a molecules in a substance. Consists of both kinetic and potential energy. In general, the warmer an object is the more kinetic energy its atoms and molecules possess. The warmer an object gets the more thermal energy it contains. Temperature - ANSWER-The average kinetic energy per molecule in a substance. It is a measurement of how hot or cold something is. It does not depend on the number of particals. What is the most common thermometer used in the world - ANSWER-The Celcius thermometer When does water freeze - ANSWER-0 degrees celcius When does water boil - ANSWER-100 degrees celcius Absolute zero - ANSWER-The lower limit of temperature. It is zero on the Kalvin scale. At this temperature molecules have lost all available Kietic energy. It can't get any cooler. Heat - ANSWER-Thermal energy transferred from one substance to another due to a temperature difference between the two substances. Heat is energy in transit. Matter contains thermal energy, not heat. Depends on the number of particals. Energy flows from the higher temperature substance into the lower temperature substance until equilibrium is reached. What are examples of heat transferes - ANSWER-Hand touches a hot stove and hand gets burned. Also, hand touches ice and ice starts to melt. What is the measurement of heat - ANSWER-joules What is a common unit for heat in the U.S. - ANSWER-The calorie. It is the precise amount of heat required to raise a gram of water 1 degree celcius. Heat transfer - ANSWER-Can happen through conduction, convection, and radiation. It is dependent on the spacing of the molecules and their ability to move. Conduction - ANSWER-Heat transfered through direct contact of substances. Energy is transfered from one partical to another. Can take place in solids, liquids, and gases. Metals are good conducters. Insulators do not conduct heat.
