syllables per line until line 5 and 7
- ABAB CDCD; follows the sonnet form until ' thy vows are
all broken' - can show theme of natural pairs

2. when we two - the use of the consonant 's' sound invokes a sombre
parted in silence moods and introduces the poem as one full with melan-
and tears choly

- alliteration of 'w' alludes to the writers incapability to talk

4. pale grew thy - repetition of cold and the harsh 'k' sound emphasises the
cheek and cold, physical and emotional coldness between them and how
colder thy kiss the love has been lost
