Discuss your state NP community in terms of scope of practice. Include your state’s scope of practice
for NPs including:
Level of independence of practice
According AANP’s interactive State Practice Environmental map, Nevada has full practice, which means
permission to diagnose, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and manage treatments (State Practice
Environment, n.d.).
Prescribing authority
According to Nevada Scope of Practice Policy (n.d.), “the NP must pass an exam administered by the
State Board of Nursing and must receive certification from State Board of Pharmacy. (Nev. Admin. Code
§632.259, Nev. Admin. Code §632.2595)”. Any prescriptive substances that include in a scope of practice
is allowed to be prescribed by nurse practitioner. For NP, to be able prescribe Scheduled II controlled
substance prescriptions, NP need to have 2000 hours or two years working under physician experience.
Any limitations of practice
As mentioned above, Nevada has full practice authority, which is great, but it creates other obstacles.
Having full practice authority NP’s are blamed for malpractice from unhappy patients. Malpractice or
civil lawsuits are time consuming, costly, and stressful. Additional malpractice insurance is highly
recommended.
Sadly, but another limitation is physician old views and believes. There are still some physicians that are
sexiest and against females, LBGTQIAs, or color nurse practitioners.
