§1 India: land vol verschillen
Cultureel mozaïek
► In India is er een grote variatie aan talen, godsdiensten en gewoonten.
● Zuid-Azië is een groot subcontinent dat gekoloniseerd werd door Groot-Brittannië.
De kolonie Brits Indië leverde katoen, jute en thee aan moederland Engeland. Bij de
onafhankelijkheid in 1947 werd India een federatie en kreeg het land een indeling in
deelstaten.
■ India heeft 27 officieel erkende talen, maar de meeste mensen spreken Hindi en Engels, de
lingua franca.
Geloven in India
► De meeste mensen in India zijn hindoe. Volgens het hindoeïsme is de bevolking
ingedeeld in verschillende groepen (kasten). Het kastenstelsel zorgt voor grote sociale
ongelijkheid.
● In 1950 is het kastenstelsel officieel afgeschaft, maar in de praktijk werkt het nog steeds
door.

► India heeft 1,4 miljard inwoners, waarvan de helft jonger is dan 25 jaar. Daardoor is de
groene druk hoog.
● De bevolking van India zal de komende 25 jaar blijven toenemen, maar het
vruchtbaarheidscijfer neemt af.
● Indiase vrouwen krijgen meer kinderen krijgen dan Nederlandse vrouwen omdat de
huwelijksleeftijd laag is, ze geen toegang hebben tot anticonceptie, en de kinderen kunnen
meehelpen om het gezinsinkomen te verhogen. Bovendien moeten ze voor hun ouders
zorgen als die oud zijn.
■ Vooral in de steden daalde de afgelopen jaren het geboortecijfer, waardoor het verschil
met het platteland groter wordt.
