body, such as ACE, grants a time-limited recognition and use of a credential to
individuals who have demonstrated that they have met the criteria for required
knowledge, skills, or competencies for safe and effective practice in a specific job role.
A renewal process is associated with certification that requires the certificant to obtain
continued education, or in some fields pass a re-certification exam, in order to retain the
credential. The credential awarded by the certifier denotes that the participant possess
particular knowledge, skills, and/or competencies to practice in the profession.

Certificates - ANS-Education or training program on a specific topic for which
participants receive a certificate after attendance and/or completion of the coursework.
Some programs also require successful demonstration of attainment of the course
objectives, such as a post-course assessment of knowledge or practical demonstration.
One who completes a certificate program is known as a certificate holder. Importantly, a
professional certification (or license) is usually not granted at the completion of a

,certificate program. There are primary three types of certificate programs:
knowledge-based, curriculum-based, and certificate of completion or participation.

National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) - ANS-An organization created to

Knowledge-based Certificate - ANS-Recognizes a relatively narrow scope of specialized
knowledge used in performing duties or tasks as part of a certain profession or
occupation. This certificate is generally issued after the individual passes an
assessment instrument. Examples include continuing education courses - generally on
one topic within a broader content area - such as online courses or webinars with a quiz
from ACE and other educators.

Curriculum-based certificate - ANS-Issued after an individual completes a course or
series of courses and passes an assessment instrument. The content of the
assessment is limited to the course content and therefore may not be completely
representative of professional practice. Examples include more robust curriculum-based
courses, series of courses, or specialty certifications and modality- and
equipment-based courses that end with an assessment or practical demonstration.

Certificate of Completion or Participation - ANS-Issued after an individual attends or
participates in a particular learning event. Typically, there is no knowledge assessed
prior to issuing this type of certificate. A certificate of attendance or participation is not a
credential, because the recipients are not required to demonstrate competence
according to professional or trade standards. Live workshops and classes issuing
certificates based on course attendance and participation are common in the health and
fitness industry and include ACE workshops and preconference workshops at
conferences.
