,Question. 1 - CONTEXTUAL QUESTIONNAIRE – QUESTION ONE (5 Marks)

1. Describe the school where you did your practical teaching (location, age, facilities, how many
learners are enrolled at the school, how many teachers teach at the school, the language of
learning and teaching, etc.)?

I would describe S.T Wendolins primary School as a wonderful, refreshing, captivating
and comfortable environment to exist in. It was a joy to perform my teaching practical
at this school. The location of the school is within 2 kilometers of various amenities such
as: parks, shops, other schools, a clinic etc. and is even close to where I live. There are
about 39 learners in a class so the school can seem quite packed, but there is an
adequate number of permanent staff (30+) and additional student teachers that can
handle the amount of learners and still perform effectively. The main language of the
school is IsiZulu, which applies to both the teaching and learning, but I find that teachers
were still quite patient with students where IsiZulu was not their first (or even second)
language. The school was always kept neat, which the principal was quite strict on, and
the fields/corridors were always kept tidy. The structure of the school was not outdated
or falling apart, being only just over 30 years old.

2. Describe the classroom in which you did your practical teaching (size, facilities, learning and
teaching support materials, classroom atmosphere, etc.)

The classrooms appear to be average sized, not large by any means. Since the
classrooms do contain about 39 learners, it does make the rooms appear to be more
cramped, but it is still manageable. Every class has extra textbooks. Every class was filled
with colours, informational and content based posters, decorations and even extra
stationary for both the teachers and the learners. The atmosphere of the class was
constructive, inviting and inclusive for everyone, allowing for a wonderful teaching and
learning environment.

3. Describe the learners you taught during your practical teaching (number per class, degree of
readiness to learn, their home environmental conditions etc.).

Every class contained about 39 learners. These learners were always ready to learn, and if they
felt a bit sluggish all I had to do was act a little silly and they jumped right into the program. All
of these learners come from a wide range of backgrounds and possesses a large variety of
diversity from: Race, Gender, Sexuality, Pronouns, Wealth, Culture, Ethnicity and even disability.
I found some learners to be from very restrictive or conservative households, so I would always
allow for a safe space where we could all express ourselves properly. I loved all my learners, and

, they loved me as well. I was given 39 hugs every morning, and they were begging me to stay
when I had reached the end of my practical. These learners are so supportive and so caring
which made it such a privilege to work with. There were of course some problem children,
which I found the most effective way to deal with them was to leave it to their actual teacher,
but they would come around eventually and even apologise for their behavior.

4. Describe your mentor/subject/learning area teacher(knowledge, teaching experience,
helpfulness, guidance, etc.,)

My mentor was very helpful throughout my teaching practice, he made sure that I was always
occupied so that I can more information and made sure that I always practice my teaching every
day.
