Language paper 1 tips
Question 1
Search for keywords in the choices& and find the phrases including them in the extract
Question 2
1. Break the extract up into 3- look for the shift in patterns
2. Name the patterns &link with methods
3. Analyse the shifting effects on the reader
-> The writer uses…(method) in the line(quote) to….
-> This makes the reader…..
E.g.
Similes-> vivid imagery
The use of the verb..
The use of the adjective…
Personification-> to bring a scene to life
Hyperbole-> makes point powerful
Question 3
Break the extract up to 3-
beginning(what idea's being introduced and why-> e.g. character, setting, time)
middle(what new information is being introduced and how this changes the readers
understanding)
end(climactic moment and what the reader realises from this)
*make sure to use quotation
E.g.
Short sentences-> effect of building tension
Nervousness and apprehension at what might be in wait
Contribute to a change in pace narrative-> rapid diction -> tension
Temporal references (using time phrases e.g. not long ago, a week ago)
adds context to the situation
Immediately relieves tension that was built in the narrative
Sustained perspective
Main character's view sustained throughout-> used consciously by the author
-> allows the reader to feel more intimate with m.c -> access to intimate moments
-> builds an affinity towards main character
-> shares the feeling of Main character tgt
Question 4
- Agree with statement- 2 paragraphs
- Disagree with statement- 1 paragraph
- Different interpretation statement ( x directly denying the statement, just taking
different approaches)
Language/ Structure
-> 3 detailed peel paragraphs
