INTRODUCTION

Conflict is a process that includes obstruction and rivalry that is deliberate. In this
essay two different types of conflicts namely intrapersonal and interpersonal will be
defined. Personal experiences of how conflicts have been handled will be discussed,
along with the lessons learned through conflict experiences and suggestions for

handling conflicts.

1.1. Two scientific definitions of interpersonal conflict
a. Bao et al (2016:542) describes interpersonal conflict as a disagreement
between two or more people that are having an interaction.
b. According to Stroh (2018:134) Interpersonal conflict refers to disputes and
differences that may be conflicting between workers that are within the same
working environment. He further explains that due to this conflict when
individuals are given a task, they may still harbour negative feelings towards
one another, have anger and mistrust of the other individual.
1.2. Two scientific definitions of intrapersonal conflict
a. Spielberger (2014) states that intrapersonal conflict implies to the conflict or
incompatibility of people’s attitudes, values and thoughts regarding concepts
related to the significant areas of one’s life.
b. Stroh (2018:134) describes intrapersonal conflict as the thoughts within an
individual that may be contradictory or conflicting. It refers to thoughts that
maybe conflicting, feelings and activities experienced by an individual worker
within the context of an institution.
1.3. How I managed to resolve interpersonal conflict. Steps I took and the
outcome the approach.
a. Interpersonal conflicts

I have managed to resolve interpersonal conflicts by following these steps:

- Arranging a meeting with the person that I had conflict with, having a
conversation with them and identifying conditions that may have initiated the
conflict.
- Additionally, I have managed to communicate effectively to resolve/avoid
interpersonal conflicts in the workplace/personal relationships. I am aware that
how I communicate with other people can either create conflicts or prevent it.
