L3 - introduction to obedience

Obedience refers to following direct orders usually from an authority figure, who has
power to punish when they do not obey

Milgram’s obedience interest stemmed from second WW due to eichmann’s justification of ‘i
was just following orders’ and he believed that anybody who was placed in a same/similar
situation would commit atrocities

A: investigate whether ordinary people would obey an unjust order from an authority figure
M :sampled 40 American males who varied in job profession recruited from newspaper advert
(OPPORTUNITY SAMPLING) paid $4.50
P : laboratory experiment in Yale university

● PPTS met two confederates, one acting as the authority figure and the other acting as a
participant named Mr Wallace. They took part in a rigged draw where ppts always get
role of teacher and confederate assigned role of learner
● Participant was instructed to shock learner in increasing volt if he answered the question
wrong / did not answer at all
● Participant were required to test the learners ability to recall pairs of word each time he
got it wrong they would administer a shock of increasing voltage

● Shocks started at 15v - 450v
● When participants got to 300 v known as ‘intense shock’ learner began to bang on the
wall shouting about their heart problems and wanting to be let out + screams of pain and
agony

● After 315v leaner stopped complaining and no response was heard from them which
had to interpreted as incorrect and would receive a shock

● Experiment would continue until the teacher refuses to continue or if maximum voltage
was reached

● When teacher wanted to withdraw before 450v experimenter was instructed to verbal 4
prods e.g. we must continue the experiment, it’s essential , please continue , you have
no choice but to go on

C : all participants reached 300V
● 65% went to 450v which was labeled dangerous severe shock and could potentially
have killed somebody
● Milgram concluded ordinary people are extremely obedient to authority when asked to
behave in inhumane manner.

● In debrief 84% of ppts said they were happy to take part in study
