CHAPTER 1 – LEAGUE OF NATIONS 1919-29
SECTION 1 – VERSAILLES AND THE LoN

● The LoN was created after the First World War (January 1920), as described in the
Treaty of Versailles.

● Since this was the first time something like this had been attempted, it had several
admin and membership issues.

● WW1 created a desire for peace stronger than ever before. Early 1918, an international
League such as LoN became goal for Triple Entente/allies.

SUBSECTION 1 – THE 14 POINTS

● Woodrow Wilson, then President of USA, issued his 14 Points in January 1918.
Important ideas to remember:

● ‘The right to self-determination’ (eg when Scotland voted to leave UK, it was
expressing that right, because it was allowed to be independent if it wanted)

● ‘Disarmament’ (apart from what was like absolutely necessary)

● ‘An end to secret treaties and alliances’ (self-explanatory)

● ‘A ‘League of Nations’ to preserve future peace’ (come on, it’s so obvious what this is)

● Because of so many conflicting wants from the Treaty, such as less imperialism from
USA and punishment from France but not too bad punishment from Britain, and so
many countries wanting to take land eg from the Ottoman Empire, there were
compromises.
