The Philosophical Enterprise
"One thing I know is I know nothing." -Socrates
To Philosophize is to wonder about life, love, and loneliness, birth and death, about truth,
beauty, and freedom. To Philosophize is to explore life by asking painful questions.
Plato, one of the best Philosophers who ever lived, claimed that "Philosophy begins in
wonder."
The etymology of the term Philosophy in Greek (Philo means love, Sophia as wisdom) is
equivalent to love of wisdom.
They are the best people to seek counsel from for they see things clearly. They know the
truth ordinary people do not know.
Wisdom, for Aristotle, is of two kinds - the theoretical and practical.
To possess theoretical wisdom is to know necessary truths and their logical sequences.
Practical wisdom deals with knowledge in the realm of action.
Theoretical and practical wisdom are both desirable and valuable.
They devote their time to examining their held beliefs and opinions that are also called intuitions to
arrive at truth.
Answers they seek are not dependent on authority and emotion.
Faculty of reason - the best element in us, divine quality that we share with gods
The best life for man is one that is devoted to Philosophy
PHILOSOPHICAL THOUGHTS IN THREE VIEWS
In the history of man's search answers to Philosophical questions, three views are dominant:
Cosmocentric views
Theocentric views
Anthropocentric views
COSMOCENTRIC
Perspectives that focus on the universe as a whole, considering it as central to understanding
existence. These views emphasize the interconnectedness of all things in the cosmos and
highlight the significance of the universe's order and structure.
ANCIENT PHILOSOPHY
Characterized as a period that held cosmocentric view. Ancient philosophers wondered
about the world (kosmos in Greek).
The question that concerned them was the origin of the universe - the arche (Greek for
'starting point')
They wanted to understand the world for they found themselves ignorant about the
workings of the universe.
Where did all things come from?
A substance, responsible for the multiciplicity of things.
This branch is the branch of philosophy now known as cosmology.
