TRUTH & OPINION (Journey to Truth)
Correspondence Theory
The oldest model of truth for it can be traced back to Plato and
Aristotle.
It is the simplest to understand because this is how we often
verify truth. But how do we usually verify truth regarding this
theory?
True proposition (statements) are those that corresponds with
reality.
The truth or falsity of a statement is determined only on how it
relates to the world and whether it accurately describes that
world.
(dictation)
If it corresponds to reality, there is truth (only condition)
Always backed with evidence
Gossips
Not always reliable
Purely intuition
Gossips are attractive to many people and the kind of claims
that seem to not need verification. But what do gossip bring?
LINGUISTIC TURN
Gossips bring problem in epistemology, answerable through linguistic
investigation. The reason why Philosophers introduced the context
principle, according to this principle, it is only in the context of a
sentence that a word has meaning (Dummett, 1993).
Sense is to be understood as a meaning (connotation or intension in
logic). Reference (referent) pertains to what is referred to or the
denotation (extension).
Linguistic Turn (dictation)
Context principle.
Rely on propositions.
These propositions are statements – context clues and they are
context dependent which makes the context principle.
